Donations allow Conversations with Friends to:
- Purchase the specific books requested by both those with whom we have the honor of visiting (currently remotely via Zoom) and occasionally by those with whom we have not visited, all of whom are being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in one of four county jails in Minnesota;
- Offer modest donations to those who have little or no funds in their commissary account to help them buy supplementary food, shampoo/soap, etc., or assist with their purchase of a phone card so they can call family and/or friends;
- Provide a “Dignity” backpack, in response to a specific request, that includes clothing, hygiene and other items for people who have been ordered deported. For example, we recently dropped off a backpack for Simon who will be deported to Sudan early in 2021 that included hygiene and other items as well as the clothing he requested: jeans, a belt, a shirt, shoes, underwear;
- Assist the relatively few people released from ICE, via our Safe Release/Accompaniment program, helping them reach their final destination by providing: a “Dignity” backpack (containing hygiene products, paper, pen, water bottle, etc. that offer comfort during their journey) and, if needed, a bus ticket, a celebratory meal and clothing.
